    Z Modular, a division on Zekelman Industries is looking for a Design Office Director – Architect or Engineer with experience in the management and coordination of design/build modular buildings. This position requires the candidate to report to the VP of Design and run the day-to-day operations of the Kitchener Design Department. The candidate will liaise between Owner, Architects and Engineers and the modular design team, and must be skilled in the development and interpretation of building design documents, the coordination of building systems and a deep understanding of building science. This position requires the candidate to be a creative problem solver with great people skills. The ideal candidate will have an interest in modular construction, automated fabrication systems, parametric design software, and developing alternative approaches to the construction industry.

     

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

    • ~15 years in construction/architectural/engineering design          
    • University or College education in related field
    • OAA or P.Eng is a definite asset
    • Experience running a12-person A/E/Con office
    • Experience managing Design-build contracts and Design Consultants
    • Knowledge of CHOP work schedules and project budgets
    • Knowledge of CCDC contracts, management and administration
    • Liaison with Executive team, Design team, Clients, Contractors and Fabricators
    • In-depth understanding of OBC and other regulatory documents
    • Advanced understanding of Revit, BIM360 and/or BIM management
    • Experience producing construction drawings, shop drawings & details

     

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Oversee Kitchener Design office and report to VP of Design
    • Work with VP and other design offices to develop design standards
    • Work with VP and Sales to analyze potential projects
    • Work with VP to describe the Z Modular system to potential clients
    • Oversee the PM’s work on project budget and design/production schedule
    • Oversee the Owner & Design Team to develop a Z Modular building design
    • Oversee weekly meetings: Project, Details, Coordination, Staff & Production
    • Oversee development of new modular details for current projects
    • Review code for envelope, fire separations, accessibility, etc
    • Review design details with team and flag questions, conflicts or inconsistencies
    • Oversee drawing package production including Permit & Shop Drawings
    • Work with Plant Manager to identify weekly production needs
    • Potential travel in CAN/US to meet clients or visit other plants
    • Assist in onboarding training and mentoring for new designers and PMs
    • Delegate tasks to design team, assist Design Manager in resourcing projects
    • Manufacturing review and resolving detailing in the shop
    • Assist in R&D for Automation Processes – robotics and parametrics
    • Assist in management of Dropbox, Sharepoint, PDM, Procore and BIM360
    • Assist in the review and interview of potential employees
