Job Description



Zekelman Industries is searching for a Building Science Manager for our Z Modular division. This position is located in Kitchener, ON.



  • Guide design, modular system production and construction projects and deliver cutting-edge building science services, including engineering and building envelope design;
  • Review AOR/EOR details and specs on new projects
  • Design new standard Z Modular details at Parapet, Matelines, Balconies, Soffits, etc.
  • Coordinate with Z Modular’s affiliates Building Science department
  • Assist product selection with Operations/Purchasing
  • Manage new building science studies conducted by external engineers, including:
    • Life Cycle analysis
    • Embodied Energy/Carbon supply chain study
    • Passive House study
    • Building envelop – Kingspan study
  • Be involved with other teams, particularly those providing, Architectural, Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services;
  • Conduct building envelope investigations and reviews to determine design options;
  • Prepare proposals, investigation reports and construction documents;
  • Provide technical advice to design team and direct project teams (consultants, production and contractors);
  • Review the quality of projects at the modular design, production and construction stage;
  • Evaluate envelope performance to ensure project deliverables and quality standards are achieved;
  • Keep the design and production management informed of issues impacting project quality and resolve issues as required;
  • Make contributions to company knowledge management and practice systems;
  • Provide technical support to project team members;
  • Planning, scheduling, and work sequence coordination
  • Prepare outline specifications for design development phases;
  • Assemble project manuals for construction documents phase;
  • Provide problem solving assistance in connection with the design and detailing
  • Review shop drawings and material submittals for general conformance with design intent
  • Conduct quality control review of construction documents while researching and preparing specifications
  • Check and coordinate details and dimensions
  • Perform material research for preparation of project specifications
  • Perform tasks in accordance with Project Delivery schedule
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Science, Diploma in Architectural / Engineering Technology or a construction-related discipline;
  • Certification or similar experience in Specification Writing, product selection and required standards and certifications.
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in building sciences, engineering or architecture;
  • Proven success managing design and construction projects involving commercial, institutional and residential buildings
  • In-depth knowledge of building materials and constructions processes for design of roofs and / or building envelopes
  • Ability to quickly identify and understand project issues and opportunities;
  • A team player who thrives on working with other successful, energetic people; and
  • An excellent communicator, with strong verbal, written and presentation skills
  • Regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance per the posted schedule is an essential function of this role
  • Lead and promote health and safety work practices as required by regulatory agencies and company policy


  • Remain in stationary position for the majority of the day.  
  • Occasional movement inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Ability to lift up to 10lbs
  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
