Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision, performs various welding duties throughout the plant.  

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads and promotes healthy and safe work practices as required by regulatory agencies and Company policy.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Operates safety equipment and use safe work habits.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
  • Examines workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Welds separately or in combination, using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys.
  • Clamps, holds, tack-welds, heat-bends, grinds, or bolts component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
  • Ignites torches or starts power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
  • Determines required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
  • Monitors the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
  • Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments, using processes such as gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc, flux-cored arc, plasma arc, shielded metal arc, resistance welding, and submerged arc welding.
  • Analyzes more complex engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan layout, assembly, and welding operations.
  • Marks or tags material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.
  • Removes rough spots from workpieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers.
  • Develops templates and models for welding projects, using mathematical calculations based on blueprint information.
  • Positions and secures workpieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools.
  • Operates metal shaping, straightening, and bending machines, such as brakes and shears.
  • Sets up and uses ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete work.
  • Uses fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies.
  • Estimates materials needed for production and manufacturing and maintains required stocks of materials.
  • Performs daily crane/mobile equipment inspections.
  • Regular, full-time predictable onsite attendance is an essential function of this role.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Highschool Diploma / GED
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States 
  • 2-3 year manufacturing experience

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to follow and implement safety and quality control programs
  • Ability to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for several hours
  • Ability to lift, climb, bend, stoop, push and pull
  • Ability to lift 60lbs.
  • Ability to stand for 10-12 hours
  • Ability to perform work in a plant/manufacturing environment
  • Other physical requirements as needed for job
