Job Description

 

 POSITION DESCRIPTION:  

The Slitter Operator leads the slitting team members in successfully accomplishing maximum coil output in compliance with company safety policies and OSHA safety guidelines. Employs quality control measures in set ups, proper material being processed, and ensure all paperwork is accurate and complete. 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Operate the Slitter with complete understanding of safety and quality procedures for this position and related functions.
  • Reference master coil tags to ensure proper material is being slit.
  • Lead slitter crew to process maximum amount of coil.
  • Complete change overs efficiently, ensuring set ups are correct using feeler gauge to check clearance between knives and micrometers to measure strip widths. 
  • Comply with company policies and OSHA guidelines affecting machine operations, such as but not limited to Lock Out/Tag Out. 
  • Maintain accurate quality records and coil paperwork, complete required paperwork to be turned in daily for production accountability. 
  • Visually inspect the quality of split edges. 
  • Recommend a regular maintenance schedule for the slitter. Coordinates with maintenance personnel to troubleshoot problems with slitter.
  • Demonstrate ability to promote teamwork and cooperation with other employees and supervisors to promote maximum work output. 
  • Uses computer to input DSC fill-up and make tags.
  • Ability to cross train others for the position and be trained to work elsewhere as needed.
  • Maintain clean and organized work area.
  • Follow and enforce company safety policies and safe work practices at all times.
  • Attend all scheduled safety, department, and company meetings as required
  • Submit detailed and accurate work orders for any equipment issues as occurrences happen.

 

PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Working in a yard or warehouse/plant within OSHA guidelines; conditions may be heated and/or unheated, dusty and noisy; steel-toed boots required daily.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts or chemicals.
  • Facility is a multiple shift operation. Must possess the ability to work a flexible schedule and be on-call at various times including possible weekends and holidays. 
  • Fast-paced moderately stressful, constantly changing day to day work environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pound as needed. Pushing, pulling, or carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or be mobile for up to eight hours per shift. Capable of ascending and descending material handling equipment.
  • Use of other tools and equipment may be required.
  • Wear proper PPE at all times (as described in company policy). 

 

REQUIRED BACKGROUND, COMPETENCIES & EXPERTISE 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Proven experience using a slitter or similar machine.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and use micrometers, feeler gauges, tape measure, and other hand tools.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills are a must.
  • Proven experience operating machinery, overhead crane, and ground operated equipment.
  • Basic computer and math skills.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND, COMPETENCIES & EXPERTISE 

  • Supervisory skills.
  • CPR/First aid skills or willing to be certified.
