Job Description

 Wheatland Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Operator for our facility located in Blytheville, AR. Reporting to the Environmental Manager and assisting with implementing Wheatland Tube’s environmental program and maintaining compliance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations.  Primary responsibilities include ensuring the efficient operation of the wastewater treatment systems and managing environmental waste. 

 

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment systems.  This includes cleaning and calibrating pH instrumentation, ensuring that system mechanical equipment is operating efficiently, maintaining chemical supplies, operating the sludge filter press, conducting preventative maintenance tasks, and coordinating with other departments to troubleshoot issues.
  • Records water meter readings throughout the facility.
  • Monitors chemical baths used in the manufacturing process and reports any issues which would affect the wastewater treatment systems to management.
  • Performs laboratory indicator testing of effluent waters and makes process adjustments accordingly.
  • Performs chemical supply and hazardous/nonhazardous waste inventories. 
  • Characterizes and stores solid wastes (hazardous and non-hazardous) generated on-site.
  • Prepares waste to be transported off-site for disposal in accordance with applicable environmental regulations.
  • Performs waste storage area and bulk chemical tank inspections.
  • Maintains empty container storage areas and arranges for disposal.
  • Documents and maintains permit required records of air pollution control equipment readings.
  • Assists with inspections by local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Performs oversight of outside contractor services.
  • Has flexibility with working hours and can work on other shifts as needed.
  • Prepares and maintains all required documentation as assigned by the Environmental Manager.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Environmental Manager.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with company safety policies and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Regular, full-time, predictable onsite attendance per the posted schedule is an essential function of this role.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to communicate in English including speaking, reading, and writing. S
  • uccessful candidate will have familiarity with computers including: e-mail, basic office equipment and Microsoft Office programs such as Word and Excel. 
  • Must be comfortable working in an industrial environment and have the flexibility to work extended hours. 
  • High School Diploma or GED required; a college degree is preferred.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES:

  • Communication Skills – Must be responsive and have the ability to communicate effectively with the Environmental Manager, other plant managers/supervisors, maintenance personnel, and co-workers.  Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as environmental regulations, equipment manuals, and company policies and procedures.  Must have the ability to prepare routine reports in  a clear and concise manner.
  • Organizational Skills—Must be well organized and be able to multi-task. Must be able to prioritize work tasks.  The successful candidate will pay close attention to detail. 
  • Decision Making – Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment.  Must be able to assess problems and situations, and be able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives.
  • Mathematical skills – Basic skills required such as addition, subtraction multiplication and the ability to make computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals. 

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATION:

  • Class K Waste Water Treatment Operator Certification
  • Annual RCRA Hazardous Waste Training
  • Annual DOT Training
  • Fork Lift Certification
