Job Description

Z Modular, a division of Zekelman Industries, is looking for a Controls Engineer / Welding Engineering Tech Intern to join our team at our facility in either Chandler, AZ, or Killeen, TX. Reporting to the Chassis Build Manager, this intern will support our team of three facility controls engineers. We are seeking a student with a background in either controls/PLC or welding/robotics. This internship offers hands-on training in both controls and welding engineering, preparing the intern for a successful transition into a full-time Controls/Welding Engineering Tech role.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with the design, development, and implementation of control systems for manufacturing processes.
  • Supports the testing and troubleshooting of PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and automation equipment.
  • Conducts analysis and improvements of process controls to optimize efficiency and performance.
  • Collaborates with the engineering team to develop and update electrical schematics, drawings, and documentation.
  • Monitors and evaluates equipment performance to ensure adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Assists in diagnosing and resolving equipment malfunctions and breakdowns.
  • Participates in continuous improvement projects focused on automation and control systems.
  • Provides support for system integration and testing of new manufacturing equipment.
  • Assists in programming, configuring, and commissioning of control systems for new projects.
  • Supports welding process development and validation to ensure weld quality and consistency.
  • Assists with the setup, calibration, and maintenance of welding equipment and tooling.
  • Performs other duties as they might be assigned.
  • Regular, full-time predictable onsite attendance is an essential function of this role.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion Electromechanical Engineering Technology Degree or Equivalent
  • Basic knowledge and experience with Siemens Tia Portal, ABB Rapid Code
  • Familiarity with steel design
  • Basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, databases (Microsoft Office)
  • Ability to travel to Internship Summit, hosted at one of our Zekelman Industries’ locations
